The Undiscovered & Olivia Easly

The other day in my Internet Communications class we had an alumni guest speaker, Olivia Easly and she works for the Watauga Democrat. Easly got her degree from Appalachian State University in communications concentrating in public relations with a minor in Spanish. She spoke about her experiences right after graduating from Appalachian.

She traveled and got an internship for a company in Utah. There she got the opportunity to participate and document the Park City Wine Classic. The Park City Wine Classic is a giant festival where master winemakers and culinary geniuses gather to indulge in the experience located at the beautiful Park City, Utah. Continuing on that, Easly got to attend this event to get exclusive documenting footage of the event. After documenting all she could, she compiled all the footage to create a video of the entire event to advertise it for this year and the year to come.

Once back fro Utah, Easly moved to Raleigh where she did some freelance work for a bit. She then told us about her current job. Her boss is located in Seattle, Washington and the graphic designer that she works with lives in Ireland. She stated that an abundance of her time is spent online communicating with her boss as well as the graphic designer. Easly said that her job is sixty percent online while the other forty is done in person.

Easly told the entire class that are important steps that one must take to really get out into the real world. She told us that networking is extremely important when it comes to getting your name out there to find a job. Easly said that you can never start networking too early. At Appalachian, there are copious amounts of opportunities where students can get their name out by networking at the many job fairs advertised throughout the years. She also stated that social media strategies is a very helpful class to talk while in college because the majority of the information in that class can really be an advantage when trying to get a job.

Networking is a huge part of The Undiscovered's website and that is one big way for how some of our represent artists may get discovered. Make sure you check out our site and help our artists dreams come true!
